Tony C was an exciting young ballplayer. At one time he was (and may still be) the youngest player ever to hit 100 major league home runs. He was the victim of a nasty, but apparently unintentional, beaning by Jack Hamilton (I think) who later pitched for the White Sox. The pitch him in the eye socket - orbital bone area and messed up his vision. He was out for an extended period of time. He attempted to make a comeback but it was unsuccessful.

I surprised Boston is retiring the number based on "what might have been", but he was on the way to potentially being something special when he was beaned.

I was sort of surprised to, although he did put in 5 solid seasons with the Red Sox, I dont know if that warrants his number being retired.

What warrants his number being retired is the fact that he's a Massachusetts boy, everyone loved him, and he was Boston legend.
