From Closer to Mop-Up

Look no further than our very own Shingo Takatsu to epitomize the current state of the modern bullpen. Although Shingo's case may be a bit different due to him being a foreign pitcher that was figured out after one year of smoke and mirrors, the underlying theme remains. In today's game, you simply do not have dominating bullpen arms year after year after year. Sure, there are guys out there like Gagne, Everyday Eddie, etc. but the days of dominating closers/pen arms are a thing of the past. To that end, I have adopted a interchangable, dispensable bullpen stance. Rather than award guys like Marte, who has had one dominating season and has been very average since, with hefty contracts, I propose guys like that be let go to try their hands elsewhere. Ride the hot hand--plain and simple. If Pollitte is untouchable, go with him, if Hermanson dominates the closer's role, use him, there is no use in trying to work guys out of funks (unless the game is a complete blowout) because the modern reliever is so wishy-washy.

I have been dwelling on this one for awhile, but I present this idea to guys like Rex Hudler, Jim, Besty, etc. to see what your take on this is.

According to Jeff Brantley, Closer-by-Committees don't work.

I say...see: 2005 Chicago White Sox. Lead the AL in saves and 2 off the major league lead.
