Deadline approaches

The next week and a half, before the July 31 deadline for trades without waivers, promises to be a busy one for Twins General Manager Terry Ryan, who wants to upgrade the offense at third base or designated hitter.

"It's a difficult thing to handicap," Ryan said. "You don't know if you are going to be able to match up with someone. Sometimes you think you may have something going, then you have it disintegrate."

Ryan wouldn't comment on possible deals, but other Twins personnel confirmed earlier in the week that the Boston Red Sox have shown interest in lefthander J.C. Romero, possibly for third baseman Bill Mueller.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting in today's editions that a three-way deal among the Twins, Marlins and Red Sox was scuttled Wednesday, although the Boston Globe reported it was still alive.

In the deal, the Twins would have gotten Mueller and prospects for sending pitcher Joe Mays to the Marlins and Romero to Boston. The Red Sox would have picked up pitcher A.J. Burnett and third baseman Mike Lowell from the Marlins, and Florida would have gotten pitcher Bronson Arroyo from Boston. Twins officials denied that such a deal had been in the works.
