Game Story

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Gabe Alvarez hit a three-run

homer to highlight a five-run rally in the top of the fourth

inning and help the Birmingham Barons defeat the Tennessee

Smokies, 8-7. After Chris Saunders singled in a run in the

fourth and later scored on an error to make the score 3-1 for

Birmingham, Alvarez hit his third homer of the year to push the

advantage to five. Saunders had two RBI and Guillermo Reyes

added a solo homer for the Barons, who have won 11 of their last

13 games. Neal Cotts (6-1) yielded an unearned run and three

hits, striking out nine, in five innings to grab the win. Cotts

has allowed no runs, nine hits and fanned 22 batters in 16

innings over his last three wins. Royce Ring, who has not been

scored upon over his last 17 frames, pitched a scoreless 1 1/3

innings to grab his 10th save. Scott Krause, who is hitting .471

(24-for-51) in his last 18 games, had three hits, including a

two-run homer, and Caonabo Cosme added three RBI to for

Tennessee, which has dropped four of five. Jeremy Cummings (4-4)

surrendered eight runs -- six earned -- and 10 hits in four

innings to suffer the loss.
