Top College Student Charged With Robbing Bank

His Lawyer Said His Online Gambling Got Out of Control

Dec. 14, 2005 — A Lehigh University class president has been arrested and charged with robbing a local bank.

Authorities said Greg Hogan asked a friend to drive him to a bank on Friday. Investigators said Hogan, who wore no mask and carried no weapon, walked in, handed a teller a note saying he had a gun, and demanded money. According to police, he left with nearly $3,000.

Police arrested Hogan hours later at his fraternity house. He was charged with robbery, theft by unlawful taking, and receiving stolen property.

Police said Hogan, the son of a Baptist minister, was an unlikely suspect. He is the sophomore-class president at the Allentown, Pa., university. He plays the cello in the orchestra and belongs to a popular fraternity on campus.

"The fact that he's a 19-year-old college student coming from an affluent family. … He just does not fit your typical profile of someone robbing a bank," said Ron Manescu, Allentown's assistant chief of police.

Hogan's attorney said that the college student's online gambling had gotten out of hand.

"He owed some money," John Waldron said. "He chose this route — a bank robbery — to try to pay some gambling debts rather than talk to his family members, borrow money."

Hogan faces a preliminary hearing Jan. 31. University spokeswoman Dina Silver said the student judicial system would decide Hogan's future at the school.
