How to keep an endangered species alive

I read yesterday in the Chicago Reader's News of the Weird section that zookeepers persuade male pandas to mate with “unattractive” female pandas by first removing the male panda from his pen, then bringing in a “pretty” female and letting her roam so as to leave her scent and urine. They then bring in the male, bring in the ugly female rear-end-first, and the male mounts. After, zoo keepers have to intervene with water hoses and firecrackers because the male attacks the "ugly" panda when he sees that "he tricked her."

Presented it to my Animal Science class as my animal-related "Current Event." We all laughed pretty hard.

Why can't they just give him some beer goggles?
