OK, so, this A/V software stuff is apparently smarter than I am. I have an AVI file, and when I play it in Windows Media Player, I get sound, but no picture. If I play it in Quicktime, I get neither. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of both. I tried to play the file via the computer's DVD software, but like WMP, it was just audio.

 

I did some Googling and what not, and there are 87098237502983750843 different codecs out there, some of which may or may not solve this problem, and none of which I trust to be clean. There are also DVD decoders (it seems that AVI format is the same as MPEG-2, aka DVD format) available, but they all cost money, which seems stupid since I have so many media players as it is.

 

Anyone know anything that could help me here?

OK, I installed it. Now what do I do with it? Its not a player. None of the media players seem to be doing anything different. Don't I need to associate them somehow?

Here is an even weirder thing - if I click properties from WMP, it says its an Audio File, even though its an AVI.

Have you tried VLC Media Player yet? It gets me past 99% of AVI file incompatibility issues and it's free. It leverages most of the better codec and mux/demux libraries from FFmpeg Project and is quite good.

Dude, the absolute EASIEST thing you can do is download the DIVX player.

 

When you try to play the file in there, it will tell you exactly which codecs you need, and either prompt you to download or write it down and do a google search and download said codec.

 

EVERYTIME I have this issue, I use DIVX, and it solves my problem quickly and efficiently.

bingo... click on the "online help" options of WMP. I had this problem once. It's probably your codecs.
