AAP: Andrew O'Neil

Recommended Posts

Born Nov, 8 1985

Andrew (goes by Drew) started his college career at Wake Forrest and took a medical redshirt his freshman season after having Tommy John surgery. Then transferred to Young Harris College and played one season there before transferring to Penn State. Drafted by Cincinatti in the 8th round last year but opted to come back to college for another season. 22 for 23 career record in save situations and over his 2 years at PSU he gave up only 11 earned runs in a total of 62.1 innings. This last season he had 43 groundouts vs. 8 air outs (only 3 made it to the outfield) so it sounds like he's got a pretty good sinker. Not sure what his velocity is right now but after his TJ surgery he was able to get it up around the high 80's low 90's. He's also already graduated from college with an economics degree. He also has a funny picture at this link Drew O'neil

So he's been getting knocked around pretty badly in Great Falls so far. His era is 7.56 with 30K and 20BB in 25ip, all in relief. The positive side is that he has a GO/AO ratio of 4.38 and avg. against is just .263 so he's getting plenty of strikeouts and the avg against is pretty low, it would seem that he just needs to work on his control. He also had a really bad start in GF and has been trying to battle back since then. We'll see what happens with him.

Started off his pro career pretty badly in Great Falls last year but so far has been having a nice start to the 09 season. He's been in Kannapolis all year and through 21.1 IP he has an ERA of 1.69. He has 6 BB and 7K's on the season with a GO/AO ratio of 3.31 which is good to see as he was drafted because he throws a power sinker as his best pitch. It looks like his success may be coming from a change in his approach. Last year he struck out 40 in just 30IP which shows that he was trying to strike guys out but he had pretty bad ERA in the high 6's. This year he's hardly striking anyone out but his ERA is much much better at a higher level nonetheless. The coaches probably told him to start pitching to contact and let his sinker do all the work breaking bats instead of trying to strike people out. We'll see what the rest of the season brings for him but this is a positive turn of events for someone who looked like a wasted draft pick last year.

O'Neil had a pretty good second season playing the whole year for Kannapolis. The finished the season 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA. He had 35k's and 36 bb's in 60.1 IP with a 3.41 GO/AO ratio and a .236 BAA. That translates to a whip of about 1.3 which isn't so hot for someone who pitches to contact like he does. HOWEVER, his GO/AO ratio is promising as is the fact that he didn't allow a single HR all season. We'll see if he can develop his control in the coming years, it seems like he needs to keep the BB's down if he's going to be successful in the higher levels.
