August 30, 200322 yr I believe when a player has a player option, he has the choice to stay with the team or become a Free Agent.
August 30, 200322 yr Once a player is put on the 40 man roster, you can only send him down to minors 3 different times (actually more than 3, you can do as many as you want in a season). So if Cotts was not sent back down this season, he would still have had 3 more full cracks at making the team, now he can only be sent back next year and year after. Now you would hope that would not be a big deal, but if he gets hurt next year and has to recover for a year, it makes it real tough for him to make the majors before he is out of options, and could allow another team to 'claim' him.

Yes, a player has three option years but once a player has accrued 3 years of major league service time, there are no options without passing a player through waivers and the player can request free agency ala Josh Paul. Player can also accept the assignment back to the minors if he so wishes. Not quite sure whether the team can pull the player back but I do not think they can which is the risk a team takes in optioning a player back to the minors.
