AAP: Clevelan A. Santeliz

Featured Replies

This guy is on the 40 man roster and yet I never hear anything about him. Who is he?

Full Name: Clevelan A. Santeliz

Born: 09/01/1986

Birthplace: Valencia, Venezuela

Height: 6' 0"

Weight: 180

Bats: R

Throws: R

Signed by the Chicago White Sox as a free agent on May 19, 2004.

Santeliz has toiled in the Sox organization a long time (though he's still only 22) and maybe has come into his own this season. He's certainly enjoying his greatest success. He's come out of the bullpen in 23 games for the Barons: 36.1 IP, 4 ER, 1 HR, 28 BB, 29 SO, 3 W, 0 L, 0.99 ERA, 1.43 WHIP. It seems he has talent but control problems.

I honestly don't know a ton about him (I couldn't tell you how he goes about his business). I do know the Sox people have talked highly of him and that he's got a big live arm and struggles like hell with his command. JPN, can you help us out here? I'll also ask around and see what I can dig up.

I did find this from Ozzie Guillen (from earlier this month):

Clevelan is a great kid and is having his best season since he signed with the White Sox, in part, because of limited activity this winter during the Venezuelan League. This year Santeliz is playing with the Birmingham Barons in Double AA and he has shown great potential because he has stayed healthy. I think this is the best shape he has been in. In terms of his attitude, he is not afraid, doesn't give in to pressure and has guts.

In addition, when I was talking with Gartrell he mentioned that Santeliz is hillarious. The big thing he has to work on is his command.

Clevelan pitched in 40 games for the Barons in 2009. He finished 4-0 with a sparkling 0.96 ERA. He saved 10 games. In 56.1 innings he walked 35 and struck out 52.

Pre All Star he walked 27 in 35 innings, fanning 28. Post All Star, in 21.1 innings we walked just 8 fanning 24.

I was reading that he could be in the Sox bullpen in 2010 . he is doing well in winter league play .

I think effectively wild is a better explanation. He's a poor man's K-Rod. He was the class clown of the Barons and one of the more personable players I've met.
