I honestly don't understand why it has become a story that a CF'er is calling off his LF and RF for balls he can get to. That is the first thing you teach any young CF'er, if you can get there, you got it.

The Sox comedy act with it is gold, but I don't get the announcers fixation with it. It's routine outfield work.

A normal outfielder isn’t going to cover the distance to field something hit to the  left fielder’s starting position. Most center fielders are going to realize it’s the LF ball and not go that hard

Bolded are awful. Signs of a bad offense that got lucky.

They are awful, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad offense. These stats take time to normalize and for everything except K% we should see a huge amount of change as all the randomness of baseball plays itself out. Most players are going to be within a few percent of their current K-rate, but we need nearly twice as many at-bats before we can have an idea about any of the other batting stats.

The graph is from a Fangraphs article on sample size and you can think about the y-axis as the confidence you can project their current stats into the future. 150 PA is where you think about making judgements on most things and that’s going to be two weeks before the season ends. How different the team looks from one day to the next is just how baseball works, but we don’t have the luxury to take games are a 1 out of 162 value.

My post is less about your’s than baseball in general, but I don’t think anyone should get too high or low until we see more.

I can see this sparking controversy soon. Is the org more loyal to Stone or Ricky? The fans obviously like Stone much more. I think Renteria is done after this season.

Loyalty might not be the full equation, but I doubt Stone would say something unless he knows the organization is on his side or he’s tired of Jason’s jokes

You're generous: 8 of the 10 are below the mean, and the one that is #1 (BABIP - i.e. luck) suggests that things will get worse.

BABIP will normalize, but so will the power numbers and that should be as/more influential. Grandal, Abreu, Moncada, Mazara, and Collins were all expected to put up better power numbers than they are, so we should see those numbers normalize even if the K% and BB% don’t trend the right way.

He doesn't really profile in a corner.

He profiles if you are optimistic on his projections. He has an above average walk rate, decent power, and a good arm. His question mark comes with batting average and strike out rate, but that’s why he’s a second tier prospect. If he’s a Charlie Tilson type that absolutely needs to be a center fielder to have any value, then I’d say he doesn’t profile, but he has the possible tools to look good in a corner. He just probably won’t hit enough or get good enough defensive reads to be productive.

Detwiler is one bad inning away from DFA status on this board. And deservedly so.

This isn’t the end-all-be-all but while you have a profile like this along with a 0.00 ERA over 9.1IP (not many innings but just less than 20% of an average relievers yearly work) you will get at least 5 more garbage appearance before you’re cut. There’s obviously something he’s doing that fools hitters right now. It could very easily fall apart at any point, especially because he’s a soft thrower, but he’s got a few appearances before he’s Brady Lail’d

  7. I'd say Ricky is more frustrating given all the circumstances (really just one: that this is a good team he's dragging down) but Ventura was considered a horrible manager. In this ESPN poll he was the worst rated manager, by fans, in all of sports. Right now, I think you could find worse managers than him, but I would've swapped almost anyone for Robin.

My one defense of Ricky is that I think he is a players' manager and is doing his best to take the heat off his players. We criticize his line-ups all day and then find out before the game that Grandal is nursing a minor injury. Once again, don't think he's great, but he's good at being the scapegoat and keeping pressure off players.

  8. The drop-off in talent could be worse in the middle infield, but I hope they bring in a defense-first bench piece for the infield. Everyone on the infield (maybe even Madrigal) can hit above league average, so I'd like to see a guy that can make every defensive play fill in when needed. Maybe Yolbert Sanchez can become the new Yolmer next year
