  1. I can't believe the Nomar for Magglio talk is starting up again. :o

I can live with the current line up, but only if we get more starting pitching.

Moving Magglio for Nomar was always a wash and to me, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I'd keep Magglio and try to re-sign him. I still think there is more chance of that than signing Nomar long term.

But all this talk about Magglio, Nixon, Damon, Cotts, Borchard etc is stupid!

Unless we get another quality starting pitcher, this year is over before it starts.

  2. Can we PLEASE put an end to the "I want Nomar because he is a big name and will bring people to the Cell" discussion. :dips***

Recent evidence suggests this is simply not true. Look at attendance with Albert Belle, David Wells, Frank Thomas, Roberto Alomar, Bartolo Colon etc. The only way the Sox draw is if they win.

The only way they win next year, and the years after, is if they trade Nomar for young, locked up pitching. I agree with the Capn, it doesn't matter what KW says now. He would have to be an idiot, which I think he might be anyway, to tell people he is trading Nomar. It would substantially decrease his value.

  3. Unfortunately, I gotta agree too, the article is dead on.

Southside - you're basically the only person left on this board (and maybe the world) who thinks the Sox should keep Nomar.

There's a reason. Your argument about star power attracting fans is goofy. It simply hasn't happened on the South Side. And nobody who knows anything about baseball thinks Nomar is a better player than Maggs. I don't care which position he plays.

Typing in caps doesn't make your argument any more intelligent. :bringit

  4. Defense leads to winning. Enough said. Magglio does not field his position well. I am sure we can all see that. He is below average out there. He is a lolly gagger. There is also something called charisma, which Nomar brings. He is a marketable player. Magglio is not. Remember that Pepsi commercial? AWFUL! I am not saying that alon brings people to the park. However, a huge name like Nomar does. Magglio is not half the name Nomar is.

I am so glad this deal appears to be dead. I can't believe there are actually people out there who want Nomar because they think he'll do a better Pepsi commercial!

Peter Gammons this morning said on MVP that Magglio is the most underrated player in baseball. And another thing, why is it that the BoSox get Maggs for Nomar and a reliever and we get Perez and Mota for him? That doesn't add up.

Southside - why didn't "huge" names like Albert Belle, David Wells, Roberto Alomar and Bartolo Colon bring people to the ball park?

  5. Although the initial responses on this site were entirely for keeping Nomar, it sounds like the great majority of people now want to keep Maggs or have an immediate trade for Nomar already done for pitching. It's great to see everybody has come to their senses.

Can anybody find a newspaper article/pundit who thinks keeping Nomar is a good idea? Kenny, are you reading the posts here or the newspapers?

How can the Red Sox get our best player for Nomar and Williamson and we get Perez and Mota for him? :sosasucks

  6. Sooooo, let me get this straight SouthSide

You think that Nomar, whose numbers over the last 2 years outside of Fenway are nowhere near as good as Magglio's, will bring fans to the ballpark?

The ONLY thing that brings fans to 35th Street is winning. I don't care who you have out there, Albert Belle, David Wells, Frank Thomas, Roberto Alomar, Bartolo Colon etc, if the Sox don't win, they won't come.

Now maybe your crystal ball is better than mine, but if you look at the numbers honestly, there is NO WAY that Magglio equals Nomar offensively. Obviously, Nomar plays a more difficult position and is a great fielder, but people don't come to see defense. Sox fans only come to see winning, and I'm sorry but Nomar doesn't make us more likely to win. And then, he is definitely gone at the end of the season, for nothing.

  7. WiteSox

Your numbers are all skewed one way - all in favor of a great year by Nomar. The fact is Nomar's numbers outside of Fenway are average at best - he's not going to hit even .300 at Cellular. You can't go by his pre-injury numbers either.

I get the Williamson angle, I just don't think it offsets Nomar's downside.

As for Valentin-Guillen and Konerko-Perez, by all means do them if these other GMs are stupid enough to make those trades.

  8. Are you high?

All of the above stuff you just wrote could just as easily have occurred with Maggs and I think its way more likely he signs with the WSox at years end. Even if we win the WS (yeah, right) Nomar goes to the West Coast.

  9. I have absolutely no confidence that KW can outsmart Epstein or Evans. My only hope is that the deal either doesn't go down as reported or KW is smarter than I think.

Is it possible that all this talk of keeping Nomar is an attempt to get either LA or Seattle to increase the price they are willing to pay for him?

I still can't believe we are talking about giving up Maggs, a fan favorite for years here, for a guy EVERYBODY says wants to go to the West coast and is basically average outside of Boston. I see this guy sulking by mid April and being another crybaby in the clubhouse. We will probably be in this division race until the end and won't trade him at the deadline, so he leaves at the end of the year for draft choices. :fthecubs

  10. I've been reading these posts all day today and listening to the radio.

I think I'm one of the only people to say "Let's keep Maggs". Nomar's average away from Fenway is around 250 and he hasn't been the same since injuring his wrist. This sounds like another KW deal like Todd Ritchie, David Wells, Bartolo Colon, Carl Everett, Roberto Alomar. We end up giving something way for ultimately nothing.

The only way this works for me is if we immediately trade Nomar for some young locked up pitching. :)

  11. Somehow I feel like a lone voice in the wind, but I'm against moving Maggs for Nomar unless Nomar is already locked up to a multiyear deal by JR or we have already traded him for pitchers that are locked up.

Maggs for Perez, Mota and Williamson doesn't excite me. Maggs is our best player and we're trading him for mid level pitching. Let's face it - we're not going to win the WS next year so why not bring our own young pitching up ASAP before we trade our best player?

Nomar is not going to want to be here and will probably play that way if he's forced to stay. He will sign on the west coast next year. I think we'd have a better chance of re-signing Maggs than Nomar.

  12. The whole deal is contingent on either being able to resign Garciaparra or trading him for pitching that is already locked up to multiyear deals. If there is ANY doubt about either of the above, then my vote is we keep Magglio. Obviously, other deals need to be made to shore up our pitching, but I can't see trading a fan favorite like Magglio for a guy who everybody knows wants to be on the west coast. With the market being relatively soft, I think we have a better chance of signing Magglio to a long term deal next year than signing Nomar. :nono
