  1. QUOTE(ptatc @ Jan 26, 2007 -> 06:05 PM) This is awful. I know all of these little towns as it's my route from my lake cottage to Indy for the 500. I can't image the horror it's caused. There is no room in humanity for a person like this. I am actually from one of these little towns, Winamac, home of the Indian Head restuarant they worked at. Although I am in the military and stuck in Augusta, GA, I often talk with folks back home. Both of these little towns (Winamac and Royal Center) were in shock. I really hope the Cass County judge throws the book at this guy. By the accounts in the story, he seems to have felt no remorse for killing this girl. I think the restaurant owner's response was spot on when this loser showed up to work the next day like nothing happened. It's just disgusting.
  2. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2007 -> 06:07 PM) And the 9/11 commission report identified a lack of arabic speakers as a key problem facing the U.S. in its current war messes. There's an easy step to ease some of the lack of linguist, have the Marines and Army stop using liguist as maintenance workers for trucks. Most linguist who go to tactical units don't use there language at all while serving with that unit. I would think this would be misusing funds. Why send someone to Monterey, CA for one to two years for learning a language to have them work on trucks?
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2007 -> 03:59 PM) If nothing else, can everyone here at least agree that removing some of the military's few Arabic speaking translators from the service during a time of multiple wars in the middle east because of their sexual orientation one of the worst ideas since invading Iraq? There's more than a "few" Arabic linguist in the military. Here's a thought: When joining the military, service members sign a contract in triplicate form that states "Don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue." Also, annual training on this subject is required. This means you aren't allowed to ask about someone's sexual preference, aren't allowed to promote your own homosexuality, and aren't allowed to perform homosexual acts. This allows for homosexuals in the military "legally" if one doesn't openly admit to homosexuality and doesn't perform homosexual acts, and in theory punishes those who actively try to "out" homosexuals.
  4. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 12:17 AM) Not sure what your criteria for 'a lot' is, but like Balta said, Iran has 10% of the world's known oil. Seems kind of like a lot to me. This is from DOE: After a quick bit of research, you are correct; myself, incorrect. But, that research also showed the liquid natural gas potential of that country is much higher than petroleum. However, potential and Iran don't mix well. Khoda hafez.
  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 06:27 PM) If we nuke Iran...what are we going to do about all of that oil sitting under Iran which will suddenly become inaccessible? What will we do when 1/10 of the worlds supply of oil becomes unavailable for years, if not decades? Salaam. I can't say a whole lot on this topic. Levenworth doesn't sound like a fun place to live. However, Iran doesn't have a whole lot of oil. Their big natural resource is liquid natural gas, and China has a nice contract to get a pretty big chunk of that. Khoda hafez.
  6. First of all, he was not "hanging out with Akmed Q. Public. The Rafsanjani family is one of the richest families in the country and has a strong political pull. The mail reason Rafsanjani lost the last election is due to there complete lack of being able to relate to the common Iranian. The campaign actually put kids on buses and had them dancing around in the cities to modern music, much like an Old Navy commercial. Most Iranians can't relate to that. Not that Iranian politics are fair and just anyway. The Supreme Religious Leader runs everything in that country. Hundreds of so-called moderate candidates in elections across the country were not allowed to be on the ballot due to their political views differing from that of Ayetollah Khamenei. Thus, supporters of said candidates and those political parties refused to even take part in the elections. It's not like winning the elections mean anything anyway. All the major political position holders are just puppets to the Supreme Religious Leader. Furthermore, I find it very fishy that Penn was with all of these "major" political players in the first place. He's obviously there with some political purpose. He could have very easily just vacationed in Iran, say something like visiting Persopolis, seen the Caspian Sea in a place like Babol Sar, gone boating on the Persian Gulf from Bandar Abbas. But, no. He chooses Tehran, where anything and everything political happens. Which is why I say he's not "hanging out with Ahmed Q. Public." In my view, the last thing America needs is some upper class multi-millionaire pinko commie liberal essentially becoming an ambassodor for our country which is mainly middle class. Iran is a freaking scary country. It has been widely reported in the news about all the issues the IAEA is having with nuclear activity in that country. The governments involvement in foreign terrorist groups is absolutely amazing. It would be a much different war, if it were to ever occur, than that with Iraq. The first issue is the size of the country. While Iraq is roughly the size of California, Iran is slightly larger than the US midwest. Population wise, Iraq is around 25 million while Iran hovers at about 80 million. The landscape is also completely different. The logical places to invade with a ground force all present issues. On the eastern side of the country (Afghanistan, Pakistan) lays an extremely brutal desert at high elevation. Invading from the west or northwest (Iraq, Turkey, Azerbajian) is difficult due to mountainous terrain. Coming in from the Persian Gulf is tough due to getting ships to the gulf through the very narrow Strait of Hormoz. Entering before the Strait in the Gulf of Oman means going through heat and swamps. This is not military intelligence; this is just geography. Which is why the present administration supports the continuing ever-growing (and ever-suppressed) indiginous movement of the people against the government. These are people who tasted westernism in the 50's through late 70's and the young people who want the country to accept more globalization, thus more freedoms. Men and women can be jailed for flirting, for simply sitting next to or talking to each other in public. Women must ride in the back of all public transit. Women must wear veils, called a hejab. The production and consumption of alcohol is illegal. Drug use is a massive problem in that country. But supporting this movement, so far, is the safest way to deal with the Islamic regime. Sorry for the novel. I'll stop here for now. I could go on for a while more, but i'll save it, for now.
