  2. From Sox.com game notes:

Quotable: “ I don’t know how they will use me. They haven’t told me. I’ll just go out and do my job.” -- Cotts on his role with the White Sox after Tuesday’s start

-- I guess it would be too much to ask JM to make a plan and communicate it to anyone, after all he doesn't remember the kid from spring training!

This team would be 20 over with a real manager.

  3. Did you hear JM on the pregame with Rooney?

Rooney asked about Cotts, who has been meeting reporters etc in the club house, and JM says he saw so many guys in the spring he doesn't remember him! Said he's 'heard' a lot of good things though!

    Incredible.

  5. QUOTE (AllStarAlomar12 @ Aug 11 2003, 03:01 PM)

If Cotts is ready, maybe they'll send Wright to AAA.

The only person it depends on is Miguel Olivo. If Olivo is healthy, Jaime Burke gets sent back to AAA. If not, Olivo goes on the DL and Cotts comes up anyway.

    From Sox notes:

Olivo on the mend: Although Miguel Olivo said his right shoulder felt “100 percent better” than Friday, the rookie catcher was given one more day of rest during Sunday’s game against Oakland. Olivo bruised his right shoulder in Tuesday’s victory over Kansas City, tripping on catcher Brent Mayne’s leg when he scored from second on a single to center.

“Any time (Manuel) wants to put me in, I’m ready to play,” said Olivo with a smile.

--- Miguel certainly think's he's ready, check the line up tonight.

--- Barring a trade Danny Wright is the best we've got for the 5th spot. It's been a miserable year for him; injury, bad breaks and some knuckle head pitches. But he still has the stuff that won 14 games last year, too much to give up on.

  6. Farmer has Burke on the pre-game and asked him what JM told him after the game. 'He said nice game but didn't talk to me.'

Later Burke said he's only played one game at first, and one at third this year.

I hope the great non-communicator was listening to the radio! How else would he fnd out?

  7. As long as the ball is on its way he is okay blocking the plate. If no play was being made, then he would simply be guilty of obstruction. The only penalty there is that the umire places the runner he felt they would have been without the obstruction.

    grazie

  8. I wonder why a bigger stink wasn't raised over Brent Mayne injuring Olivo by blocking the plate without the ball. This was the night after the ejections for the bean balls so you'd think the same umps would be calling every little thing, let alone a clear violation that hurts a player.

What's supposed to be the ruling on blocking with out the ball? Ejection? Runners advance?

  10. Can he play an adequate centerfield or not? I don't get to see enough games to give a valid opinion, but from what I have seen, he plays mighty deep and lets a lot of bloops fall in front of him.

My take is he can survive in center in US Cellular but pull him late with a lead before he hurts himself.

Don't even try him in a big CF like Comerica. He doesn't have CF speed and doesn't get a jump.

Better than Milton Bradley, not as good as Aaron Rowand or Willie Harris.

He does seem to play hard, every day and play.

  11. In my eyes the judge's comments about violence in sports have nothing to do with Ligue's case. I think if he had simply stated the sentence as time served, and added on the 3 year drug and alcohol monitored probation, people would think it more fair. This is supposed to be about Ligue, not sports or the judge.

Things have happened since the crime, it's not like he was let go with a slap on the wrist the morning after. He sat in the clink for the first 2 or 3 months when he couldn't make bail. He's gone through drug and alcohol rehab. He's joined AA and still attends the meetings. He is working steadily. If the judge had cited Ligue's progress and quoted Reagan's 'trust, but verify' line when imposing the probation, the holier than thou's would have been quiet.

Ligue committed a crime. His choice to do the drugs and beer contributed to it. He is a convicted felon. If, unlike his son, he gets through his 3 year drug monitored probation and continues to live his life soberly and peacefully I say he has paid enough. People who have never been or lived with a drugie/alky don't understand the power of substance abuse. I don't consider them victims, and do feel they are responsible for their actions under the influence. But, I will support anyone who does the time, fesses up to himself, his God and his neighbors and tries to straighten out his life. As far as I can see Ligue has met that criteria (to date, let's keep an eye on him, I agree with old Ronnie on that one).

  12. I thought somethign was going on with Alomar stealing signs at 2nd. This is just a guess of course, but here's what i saw

Ya think they might have done the old double cross? Pre-arrange a high hard one and have the catcher sign and set up for breaker outside.

    That will stop sign stealing.

  13. Hellow CWSOX, the trolls drove me off the other board, nice to see people talking about baseball.

I joined the forces of evil demanding that JM go earlier in the season. My issue is not so much his in game decisions as his failure to handle men and get the best out of them. I heard Everett on the radio with Farmer taling about bunting and saying "they seem to be asking me to be an RBI man here", not 'my job hitting in the middle and driving runs'. A couple days after his call up Matt Ginter is with Farmer who asked him if was brought up to throw long relief or for spot situations. He said neither JM or KM talked to him but Cooper told him to be ready for anything! What a circus, in my eyes it really lent credence to Rick White's little tirade.

Last night Jon Garland was so mad he didn't talk to any reporters. JM explained to the media that his plan was to bury the Royals with his leftys, a pretty good plan actually, but wouldn't a leader of men have explained that to Jon and brought him on board? Jon did his job, why does he have to go home PO'd?

I could go on and on with examples, but I think it is a sign of good managers, like Bobby Cox, Lou Pinella and yes, Tony Larussa, that the players know what is expected of them, are taught how to prepare for it and are the first to know when their role is changing. With the beloved White Sox I see a team with by far the best talent in the division feeling, floundering and groping it's way through the season. It's this tenativeness that's killing us.

Big game tonight, I hope JM wins, but I think we'd be better off with a leader.
