As well as Ochoa has played, they still have needed to get really lucky multiple times today for it to still be 0-0.

Lucky how? I thought Mexico were great value for the draw. Defended phenomenally well. Ochoa came up big. Tactics were spot on for frustrating Brazil. They had several opportunities to score themselves. It's not like they just stuck 11 men behind the ball and sat back for the draw.

Also Fred is awful. No movement whatsoever.

  2. Very interested to see how Belgium perform here today. Excellent squad on paper. Breezed through qualifying unbeaten. I feel like we cannot call them a dark horse though because everyone is calling them a dark horse, but they could definitely threaten the bigger teams.

Ghana had a great chance there to equalize at the end. Kind of whiffed on it (#13).

They've looked the better team for most of the half. Christian Atsu is the best player on the pitch for me. Wouldn't be surprised if USA grind it out for a 1-0 win though. I think Ghana are extremely lacking when it comes to end product.

  4. From Kiley:

Three more top Latin American prospects that all project for seven figures on July 2nd and don't appear to have deals in place yet are: Huascar Ynoa (RHP, Dominican and the younger brother of Michael Ynoa), Pedro Gonzalez (SS, Dominican) and Bryan Pena (OF, Dominican). Gonzalez has been mentioned with the Padres as they were the team with the most money not yet committed and were following him closely at Gonzalez's games that I attended last month. Gonzalez could get over $2 million, as could Ynoa (who the White Sox have been on, among other clubs), while Pena's bonus should be lower, down around $1 million or less.

Same as we've heard for a while now. Sox linked to Ynoa but nothing really concrete.

I like Germany more than Portugal, but a draw is the best outcome for the US.

Disagree. Germany look to be the class of this group. I would expect them to win all three games comfortably. In the race for 2nd place it benefits the US if Portugal don't get anything here.

  6. Nathaniel Stoltz ‏@stoltz_baseball

Lowry 90-92 t94, SL 81-85, CH 80-83. All are serviceable and could be at least average in time.

Lowry found a better rhythm in the fifth, hit 93 several times.

  7. From BA's hot sheet chat:

Tim (Chicago): What is your take on Francellis Montas? He has seemed to find his control this season, what is his ceiling?

J.J. Cooper: He’s got monster stuff. Reyes may be the best stuff I’ve seen personally this year, but Montas is in that top group. Still not sure he’s a starter, but he’s got a very good shot at being a power reliever.

Steve (Chicago): Tim Anderson has racked up some big error totals so far this year, but have you heard anything recently about his ability at SS?

J.J. Cooper: He’s making a lot of young player errors, but there are questions about whether he has the hands and actions to stick there long term. Worried less about the errors and more about whether he’s got true shortstop actions.

  8. Croatia were very unlucky.

Neymar should have been sent off for his elbow... looked straight at (I think it was Modric), raised his elbow and slammed it into the side of his head. Easy red card. Then Neymar scores 2 minutes later. BS penatly decision. Foul against Croatia for the challenge on the GK. Even will all that if Pletikosa had even a half decent game it could have finished 1-1.

Agreed and Ravelo just turned 22 and still hasn't hit for the type of power you would want out of a full time 1B/DH type. So even if Dunn is back on a 1-2 year deal, it's no big deal. Ravelo isn't the type of prospect where you HAVE to make room for him on the major league roster.

Agreed on Ravelo. I was hopeuful for a nice power outbreak this year and it looked like it may be coming in April, but he's back to normal again now.

    Ravelo's ISO per month:

    April- .242

    May- .105

    June- ..075

    Overall- .143

I do like Ravelo and hold some hope for future power, but he's borderline top 10 right now at best for me.

Hey Keith- What's your opinion on the white sox signing picks 2-10 before Rodon? Is it a good move removing the negotiations from the process and just admitting this is what we have left to offer?

I thought so. You're playing chicken a little bit - you have to be willing to lose the player and get the pick next year - but it puts Rodon in a position where he has to walk away from probably $6 million, but can't reasonably ask for more because it would require them giving up their top 2015 pick.

And any pitcher who walks away from $6 million probably doesn't want to play baseball that badly. Or else he just has a lot of insurance.
