Close by committee? Grilli lands a roster spot?

Featured Replies

Jason Grilli probably secured his spot in the White Sox bullpen by pitching three hitless innings in a minor league game yesterday.

Grilli gave up nine runs in his previous appearance, but with the exception of that outing, the Rule 5 pick has had a fine spring.

Although he reiterated that Billy Koch is his closer, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said yesterday that he would use Damaso Marte in save situations in certain situations.

"If there are two lefties coming up, Marte is going to be the closer," Guillen said. "It'll depend on the situation, but the man we're going to lean to is Koch." We'll see how long that lasts. Marte is the better pitcher and could take over the job at some point.

Hooray, as long as Koch stays away from closing games, I'm estatic.

Sounds like Grilli lost his spot.

The White Sox may now be leaning toward not keeping Rule 5 pick Jason Grilli.

They could work out a trade with the Marlins and send him to the minors, but it now appears that he won't be a part of the active roster. If Grilli is out of the picture, then Mike Jackson, Jon Adkins and Neal Cotts are competing for two bullpen spots. Cotts is starting today, and if he pitches well, there may be a slight chance that he could join the rotation and bump Scott Schoeneweis to the pen.

I think they'll cut a deal w/Florida, keep Grilli and temporarily send him to AAA.

My guess is they also want to keep Jackson. They have more flexibility to send down Cotts and Adkins, I don't believe Jackson will accept a minor league assignment.

All of this smells like a trade, particularly with Schoeneweis not working out so far.

I agree, I think two minor deals go down, one involving Grilli and then one more, in my opinion for a pitcher.
