The economy is suffering because the stock market was so inflated. Companies that weren't making anything, that had super high P/E ratios were going through the roof. Those prices had to go down and as the market fell the economy wouldn't be as good. No one could possibly believe Amazon was worth what it was or that Aol was worth what it was.
