WSC Recap - By Mike Matha - 5/16/04

In a game the White Sox could ill afford to lose, Mark Buehrle's pitching and the White Sox offense stepped up in a rather large way. Buehrle threw 6 and 2/3rd's of shut out baseball while Jose Valentin and Magglio Ordonez led charge of an 11 run outburst.

Just one day after commenting on the White Sox offensive production, manager Ozzie Guillen tinkered with the line-up. Willie Harris, normally the White Sox 2B was roaming CF, allowing the hot bat of Juan Uribe to play second; and Jose Valentin, normally the number two-hitter in the White Sox line-up was inserted into the 6th hole, breaking up Lee and Konerko.

The line-up tinkering paid off for Guillen and the Sox as they provided Buehrle with 11 runs on 15 hits.

Buehrle threw his second dominant game in a row, and has allowed 0 ER in his last two starts. His ERA is back down under 4.00, at 3.99 and now joins Scott Shoeneweis and Jon Garland as starters bolstering ERA's under the 4.00 mark.

Mark went 6 and 2/3rd's, surrendering 0 runs on 7 hits, 0 BB, and 7 SO. The win moved Buehrle to 3-1 on the season.

The White Sox got the action started in the bottom of the second, taking a 3-0 lead over Carlos Silva and the front running Twins. Carlos Lee led the inning off with a double, and Jose Valentin wasted no time singling him in for the only run the White Sox needed.

With one out and Valentin still on first, Joe Crede launched a home run (8) into left, giving the Sox an early 3-0 lead. Crede was hitless for the rest of the afternoon.

The White Sox added more to their punch in the bottom of the third, putting up another crooked three spot onto the board. With Lee and Ordonez aboard, Jose Valentin parked his fifth home run (5) into the right field seats.

Still not finished with three spots, the White Sox added three more in the bottom of the fourth, giving themselves a commanding 9-0 lead. Magglio Ordonez singled to center with the bases loaded, scoring Sandy Alomar Jr. and Willie Harris, highlighting the inning.

Ordonez also added an RBI double in the fifth. Magglio was 3-4 with 3 RBI on the evening. After the game, Ordonez's average rose to .302.

SS Jose Valentin finished off his fine evening with 3 hits and 4 RBI. This was Valentin's first game batting in the six hole this season.

The White Sox victory put them within two games of first place. The Sox will travel to Cleveland tomorrow to play the Cleveland Indians. Rookie Felix Diaz will make his second major league start on just three days rest.

What was the statement? That the Twins won the series on our field?

We'd better make a statement next weekend in the Metrodome.

What was the statement?  That the Twins won the series on our field?

We'd better make a statement next weekend in the Metrodome.

The statement was that we didn't fall down and die against their 'ace'. We hammered him.
