Ray had sparks out unbelievable defense. Remember, in the Home Opener against the Angels in 2000 that over the shoulder, diving grab he made about, what was it? 40 feet?, on the right field grass? That was unbelievable. Still probably the best defensive catch I've ever seen.

As much as I liked Ray, he was a bit of a butcher in the field, although he would make some great plays too. My memories of him in a Sox uniform will be that of a pretty good hitter, who could hit in the clutch, but, especially, he was a great, great baserunner. Not just stolen bases, but just a tremendous base runner period. Very few big leaguers could cut the corner rounding third without losing speed on the way home the way Ray could. Same going from first to third. Same scoring from third on a short sac fly. In the words of The Hawk, "I love to watch Ray run."

Okgoh, are you kidding me? Best fielding 2nd baseman of our era? What, cuz he could run down a fly ball? I'll give him that, but man, there were PLENTY of muffed groundball and more than his share of defensive lapses, for sure. Pretty good fielding 2nd baseman, ya, but not THAT great.

Allright, maybe my heart speaks. The 2nd base piece of my heart was cut out.

Ray is capable of making some great plays though. I've seen a few.

This remains my "best White Sox moment". ... ...

July 5, 2000 The Sox are looking like the best team in MLB! But it is still early.

In extra innings the Sox get screwed on a double-play call at 1st base--

safe by I'd say 1/2 a second, no outs yet.

This was in KC, and even the Royals fans grimaced. Then later... ...

I think it was the bottom of the 11th, 1 out, men on 1st and 3rd-- fast one hopper to the right of second.

Ray Durham some how got a jump on that speedy hit, running towards CF.

How he touched it I'll never understand, how he stayed on his feet and pivoted in the air and hit the SS at 2B, it was truly a beautiful feat! = DP

( I would like to see a film clip of that, unbelievable. )

Anyway the Milkman and Konerko hit HRs and it was over. Really Unbelievable!

I've seen Ray make some other great plays but that one is my favorite.

Seen him muff some that my grandma could've handled too.

Please excuse my heart, I'm kind of in mourning.
