July 15, 200421 yr From the Boston Herald, Major league baseball returns to the field tonight, but the biggest battle in the game may take place over the phones in the next 2 1/2 weeks. Included in the competition are the New York Yankees [stats, schedule], Anaheim Angels, Chicago Cubs [stats, schedule] and a pair of Sox. The contest: The hunt for Randy Johnson. While there were indications yesterday the Arizona Diamondbacks have had contact with all five clubs regarding a trade for the left-handed ace, baseball sources continued to indicate that Red Sox [stats, schedule] shortstop Nomar Garciaparra [stats, news], too, is being eyed closely. While much speculation has centered on a deal that would send Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs, one source has indicated the Chicago White Sox [stats, schedule] still have an interest in Garciaparra. As for the Cubs, baseball sources said on Tuesday that the team had little indication Garciaparra was currently available. Over the winter, however, White Sox general manager Ken Williams and Sox GM Theo Epstein had essentially agreed to a deal that would send Garciaparra to the White Sox for outfielder Magglio Ordonez. That deal was dependent on the Sox also acquiring Alex Rodriguez from the Texas Rangers, a trade that fell through when the Major League Baseball Players Association rejected a Sox proposal for the restructuring of Rodriguez' contract. While Garciaparra is eligible for free agency at the end of this season, the White Sox have interest in the player beyond this year. Should Chicago acquire Garciaparra, the White Sox would do so with the hopes of immediately extending his contract, as they did with recently acquired pitcher Freddy Garcia. Acquired from the Seattle Mariners [stats, schedule] earlier this season, Garcia subsequently agreed to a three-year, $27 million contract with Chicago. While it remains unclear what role, if any, Garciaparra might play in a deal for Johnson - the most obvious is in a three-way scenario - the left-hander understandably would command a steep price. Though he will turn 41 on Sept. 10, Johnson is signed through next season, increasing his value to a new team.

July 15, 200421 yr weren't we going to send Garciaparra to the Dodgers for Odalis Perez and some other players?
July 15, 200421 yr weren't we going to send Garciaparra to the Dodgers for Odalis Perez and some other players? Damn right. I am glad we didn't get those guys. Let's give one big sign of relief.
July 15, 200421 yr can't see nomar immediately signing with us. And we can't afford to give up Ordonez with Thomas unlikely to play for a bit
July 15, 200421 yr Wasn't Joe Crede the missing piece of this deal and Kenny pulled him back? I mean it'd be ok to trade Crede in a deal for Nomar...
July 15, 200421 yr I thought Crede was part of the Garcia deal and KW said no, no, no. that's why the Mariners got Mo

July 15, 200421 yr That's why the Mariners got Reed, and they held out for Morse too ... Sox did not want to give him up. As they shouldn't, not even for Johnson.
