Great Falls Struggles, but Stays in First

Featured Replies

Everyone: Sorry for getting this up so late. It has been a crazy week (as many of you know) for Soxtalk, and Future Sox has kinda slowed up too. Anyway, this article is for August 16-22, not August 23-29. This week's Great Falls Review will probably be up tomorrow or Tuesday. Thanks

Great Falls Struggles, but Stays in First

With a record of 3-4, the Great Falls White Sox returned more to their mid-season form than how they had been playing the last 2 ½ weeks. However, the Sox’ record was good enough to keep them in sole possession of 1st place in the Northern Division of the Pioneer League.

The offense was once again led by Tom Collaro. In 29 at-bats, the 6-foot-4 Collaro hit .379 with a team leading 2 HR’s and 12 RBI. Surprisingly, he also added two triples on the week, a very good number for a guy who’s not exactly the fastest player in the world.

Also pacing the offense for the 2nd week in a row was Adam Ricks and Chris Kelly. The 21-year-old Ricks was 8-21 on the week, with 8 runs scored, a HR, and 4 RBI. Defensively, though, the 5-foot-10 switch hitter added to his team-high 11 errors with 2 more this week. He now has 13 in only 40 games played. Kelly, in his 2nd year with Great Falls, hit .400 in 25 at-bats this week. He also drove in 4 runs, and scored 6 runs in 6 games.

The starting pitching did its job for the second week in a row. They weren’t as good as last week, but that would have been almost impossible to top. The starters combined to go 3-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 36 IP. They also recorded 35 strikeouts, while walking 10. There was no single-best outing of the week, because two players tied for that honor. Ray Liotta got the win, giving up 1 run (ER) in 6 IP and striking out 8, while walking 2. John Egbert also got a win, going 6 innings without yielding a run and striking out 7.

None of the relievers had great weeks, but there were a few good single-game outings. Demetrius Banks pitched 2 innings of 1 hit, scoreless relief, but that’s all the action he saw last week. Boone Logan didn’t have a great overall week, but he did have one impressive game in which he went 3 innings, giving up 0 runs and striking out 5, while picking up the save.

Banks was promoted to Kannapolis.

Banks was promoted to Kannapolis.

Yeah. This article, as I said before, is a week old. There will definitely be mention of that in the next one I write.
