Colon and Olivo

Olivo caught Bartolo Colon for the White Sox’s Triple-A group during a simulated game against the Double-A squad Monday morning. Colon moved from his start against Anaheim to the back field at the training complex in order to insure his work schedule would not be interrupted by afternoon storms.

Colon threw 72 pitches, 47 for strikes, but allowed long home runs to Juan Piniella and Eric Battersby. The right-hander struck out five, including all three batters he faced in the second, and walked just one.

Throughout Spring Training, Colon has paid little attention to runs scored against him -- six in the minor league game -- and focused more on featuring individual pitches. That philosophy was followed again Monday.

“Bartolo wanted to work on his changeups and breaking balls,” Olivo said. “He hung some pitches and allowed a couple of solid hits. But, he threw very well.”

Olivo has now caught Colon twice this spring and claims he feels comfortable calling games for the veterans. Acquired from Oakland for Chad Bradford in the 2000 offseason, Olivo has just two years at Birmingham and six games with the White Sox in 2002 as anything close to Major League experience.
