FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) - Joe Nemechek is "G.I. Joe" to many NASCAR fans, a nickname stemming from the GoArmy.com logo on the hood and bumper of his Chevy Monte Carlo.

Every lap he leads and every pole he wins puts the Army in millions of living rooms nationwide.

Sponsoring Nemechek is part of a military recruiting strategy, which includes advertising at football games and rodeos, aimed at maintaining the all-volunteer force during the war in Iraq and the hunt for Osama bin Laden.

"We have to get the best young men and women in the Army to continue," said Tom Tiernan, a 22-year Army veteran who is now a civilian employee leading the marketing program.

The program's success is open to debate. A federal General Accounting Office report concluded last year that the military - even though its advertising spending rose from $299 million in 1998 to $598 million in 2003 - couldn't truly evaluate such campaigns because "joining the military is a profound life decision."

$600,000,000 on recruiting :o

Military spending is sacred, must not criticize military spending, military spending is sacred

Gee, according to Michael Moore they only recruit young, poor minorities?  How many of those do you see at NASCAR events? This will never reach their target group. :huh

According to conservatives against a draft, there is no shortage of recruits, then why spend $600,000,000 to recruit? Why does the Army need to sponsor a car?

Here is the Army's demographics.

http://www.armyg1.army.mil/hr/demographics...rofileWebVs.pdf

14.4% of our population is black, yet over 20% of the military is black. Maybe they are wasting their money sponsoring NASCAR. Perhaps the Chicago Opera House would be better. :D I assume that kids in Winnetka join the military at about the same rates as a kid from North Chicago, both North Shore suburbs.

14.4 vs 20%? Overrepresented, yeah, sorta. Whats your point?

Actually the majority of people I know from Chicago are not actually from Chicago but the burbs. Maybe you're on to something.

Evil mentioned the assertion by some liberals that the military only attracts poor minorities. I don't believe that is quite true, but I do believe that it attracts some people with less choices than others. Ivy League or Iraq League? :huh Where is Sterling Jefferson III going? Assembly line or Iraq line? Where is Juan Carlos Villareal going? Wars have been fought for centuries by the less privileged in every society, not just the US. When wealth and position collide with the military, the child becomes an officer or it makes world news.

BTW, a glance at the stats show that blacks only make up 10% of the officers. I believe that could partially be explained by whites staying on longer and having enlisted as officers.

Claims that most servicemembers are poor minorities are purely false. Just from personal experience most people I've known have been mostly middle class and white.

You are correct that people with more choices in life are less likely to join the service though & that's just from applying the common sense test and no statistics.

I think the reason that there are a lower percentage of black officers is that blacks are less likely to finish college.

It was not that they attract only poor minorities, but that they only recruit poor minorities.  That claim was made my Moore, as well as several Democratic Senators during the Presidential campaign (Charlie Rangle was the loudest).

My buddy Charles Rangel LOL! One of 2 House of Representatives members who voted for bringing back the draft. Between him and Michael Moore you have every angle of stupid demagougic asshatness covered.

Look at where they locate recruiting centers, of course more poor people are attracted to a military career, it's step up.

It's a recruiting process. If you needed to recruite 500 kids from Chicago, would you spend time in Michigan Avenue mansions and private schools, or public schools? Don't fault the military for the demographics of the people that are attracted to enlisting right out of HS.

A draft would be interesting. I think many a war hawk would simmer down if they thought that their kid could be serving. I wonder how good a pilot Jenna would be?

There may be a lot of non minorities in the military, but look at the pictures of the deceased, there are a lot of minorities in that picture.

How much recruiting time would you spend in Winnetka, Lake Forest, etc. vs. North Chicago?

How do you sell military service to a rich kid from Winnetka?

Money for college? Got it..

Job training? Got it

Secure Employment? Got it

Health Care? Got it

Patriotism? That has a shot.

Remember the outpouring for Tilman? Why not the same for a poor kid from Los Fresnos, Texas? Because rich white guys with choices are the exception, not the rule.

I believe the military does, and should, spend most of their time recruiting poor kids. It is the easiest, fastest, and sureist return on their time and money.

Nobody.....NOBODY within the military wants a draft.

Rumsfeld doesn't

Bush doesn't

The generals don't

The mid level officers don't

The NCO's don't

The last time there were major internal problems in the military was during Vietnam because a fair percentage of those doing the fighting were draftees and a fair percentage of them did everything they could do to avoid going but missed the 9:30 to Toronto. After going to an all volunteer force the quality of the average soldier improved dramatically and the readiness level went right with it.

The military prides itself on being a professional force made up of people who want to be there.

Despite all the nonsense the left spread around on the web the only ones in government who want a draft are Charles Rangel and the other moron ( singular ) that voted for it last year.

I wonder how good a pilot Jenna Bush would be if we had a draft . . .

No Republican wants to head back to the club and explain how he voted to draft Kyle Worthington Jr. into the Army.

No company, like the military, wants people forced to work for them, especially in a dangerous job that requires commitment and trust in every person.

But don't kid yourself, middle class families fear a draft more than anyone. They are stuck in the middle. Not enough clout to have their kids in the Air National Guard, but enough resources to send their kid to college and a nice safe profession.
