March 3, 2005 (PLAINFIELD, Ill.) — Three helicopters and at least seven ambulances responded to a multivehicle accident involving several semitrailers along a stretch of Interstate 55. All lanes on Interstate 55 between Route 30 and Route 52 are closed. The interstate is expected to be closed for several hours -- possibly into the afternoon commute.

The emergency crews from several neighboring communities were dispatched after the accident was reported at about 12:30 p.m. near Plainfield, which is roughly 30 miles southwest of Chicago.

The Joliet Fire Department sent two ambulances to the crash site. One of those ambulances transported two victims to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet.

Debris from the accident was spread across all lanes of the interstate and a nearby frontage road, authorities said.

I drive that way everyday getting off at 126 - which is about a mile before 30. The pictures are horrific.. there are surely deaths.

Wow..my parents were going to the airport at just about that time. They must have gone by right before the crash. Good thing I got a hold of them right when I got home from work (they were in their seats) else I would have been worrying until they landed at 730.

Luckily I go to the Bally's by work so I don't leave the Rolling Meadows area until around 7:30.

I warned Brian to take Lagrange all the way home as it might have an effect of the tri-state. It might be closed at the Burlington Northern for track repairs, but he'll get through it quicker than I-294.

Thanks for the heads up though - I will be aware of it tonight just in case.
