March 24, 200521 yr Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood was scratched from his start on Thursday because of tightness in his lower back. Thursday would've been Wood's first Cactus League start since March 9. He came out of that game with tightness in his right shoulder, and had been throwing in simulated games. If Wood is all right on Friday, he will throw a simulated game. "He didn't sleep well," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Thursday about Wood. "His back is real tight so we decided not to take a chance. It's not his arm, it's his back, which he has trouble with every once in a while." Wood has had back problems in the past, and told Baker he didn't want to skip Thursday's game. "He wanted to pitch, but we thought it better not to take a chance," Baker said. "If it locks up on him, who knows how long he'll be out." Wood was to get treatment on Thursday and see a chiropractor. Baker didn't expect this latest setback to keep the right-hander out the first week of the season. As of now, Wood is expected to start the home opener on April 8 against Milwaukee. "We decided not to take a chance," Baker said. "Hopefully, it'll be OK for him to throw in the back field [on Friday]. We'll bring him back on three [days] versus four, and hopefully he'll be ready for Game 4 [of the season]." The Cubs' pitching staff has taken a hit this spring. Wood has been bothered by a sore shoulder, Mark Prior is rehabbing from inflammation in his right elbow and was to throw a bullpen session on Thursday. Reliever Joe Borowski has a fractured bone in his right wrist and will be out a minimum of six weeks. Does Baker feel the Cubs are snake-bit? "I don't deal with problems, I deal with solutions," Baker said. "We've got the doctors on it. It's happened before to him. "It's not a bad back -- it's just a back that acts up on him," Baker said. "When it happens, you don't know when it's going to happen. He pitched a game last year when he was completely locked up against Pittsburgh." It's tough for Wood to deal with. He would've been the Opening Day starter this year for the third straight season if he didn't have the shoulder setback. "The guy wants to pitch big-time," Baker said.
March 24, 200521 yr either their lying and his arm is a mess or the cubs pitchers are a bunch of sallys. The white Sox got "win or die trying" the cubs got "win or ouch my back hurts"

March 24, 200521 yr Im happy that we dont have to deal with the lying of a newspaper to us. The tribune just keeps lying to cubs fans when they should just come out and say Wood will be out for a month, because everyone knows its true. That would really piss me off if I knew I was constantly being lied to.
