Looking back on the 2003 Illinois recruiting season.......it was a helluva year. Brown, Williams, Augustine. Here's what they said back then.........

Illinois: The Illini signed two point guards, grabbing McDonald's All-American Dee Brown and Deron Williams to replace Williams. Brown is expected to be an impact point, while Williams will log some backup minutes. One thing Williams' early decision allowed the Illini to do was sell both recruits on available minutes right away. Illinois can also use returning guard Luther Head at the point at times and will get him some quality minutes if he heads out on a Big Ten all-star tour this summer. Illinois will lose Williams' leadership and his uncanny way of getting past a defender at will when he decided to use his first-step quickness to his advantage. But adding Brown means they can put on the court a point with a big-time rep to immediately start feeding the new No. 1 option in Brian Cook inside and out. This team will still be a Big Ten contender, just not a national one next season.

"I don't think so Tim!" GO ILLINI! :headbang

Why would a four star recruit be a back up?

I think it was referring to their first season, seeing as how "impact" means right away...And their was mention of Cook. It makes sense at the time. Frank was leaving so Dee would essentially start his freshman year with Deron backing him up. I don't know how it went that first year, but it's a decent initial assessment. Who was the starting SG that following year?

Does this deserve it's own thread?
