Pink wristbands raise awareness for breast cancer

For a good cause:  The White Sox and Blue Jays joined teams around baseball to mark Mother's Day by wearing pink wristbands to raise awareness for breast cancer research. The teams also posted their lineups on special pink cards featuring a ribbon design.

White Sox reliever Cliff Politte, who worked to organize the team's effort, said there are plans to auction signed memorabilia to raise money for breast cancer research.

The cause has a special meaning for Politte.

"I chose it because I have a good friend at home in St. Louis whose mother died of breast cancer," said Politte. "Anything we can do to bring some awareness to any kinds of need, be it cancer or anything else, it's an honor for us to do it, so I do what I can to help out."

Politte joked that it was a minor struggle to get rough, tough ballplayers to don pink wristbands.

"That's the tough part," he laughed. "But once they put their egos aside and realize what it's for, it's pretty easy."
