Pirates place Perez on DL

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Pittsburgh Pirates starter Oliver Perez's fiery approach on the mound has served to help make him a fan favorite at PNC Park.

When Perez's competitive fire spilled over into the visiting clubhouse at Busch Stadium on Sunday, it only served to add yet another level of frustration to his disappointing 2005 season.

Upset after allowing four runs on seven hits and five walks on Sunday, Perez kicked a metal laundry cart and broke his left big toe. The southpaw was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. He is expected to be out of action for up to four weeks.

"It's certainly unacceptable," Pirates GM Dave Littlefield said of the cart-kicking incident. "Not only does it hurt Oliver and his progress this year, but certainly it's a letdown for the team."

Perez has gone 6-5 with a 6.16 ERA in 15 starts one season after emerging as one of the dominant left-handed pitchers in baseball. Perez pitched well immediately after taking two weeks off in May to work on his pitching mechanics. But in his last three starts, Perez once again struggled with his command, allowing 13 runs and walking 13 batters in 16 innings.

Right-hander Ian Snell, who was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday, would appear to be the likely candidate to replace Perez in the rotation. However, Littlefield was not ready to commit to that move as of Tuesday afternoon.

"It's something we're looking at right now as to what we do with Oliver's starting spot," said Littlefield. "No decision has been made."

Outfielder Nate McLouth was recalled from Indianapolis to take Perez's place on the 25-man roster. In 74 games with the Indians, McLouth batted .306 with 12 doubles, five home runs, 32 RBI and a team-leading 23 stolen bases.

The Pirates will likely make an additional move to add a 12th pitcher to the roster before Saturday, which would have been Perez's next scheduled start.

Damnit, I traded for him 2 weeks ago...

^ Bad idea seeing as his control has been terrible this year.

I just rejected a trade of Zambrano for Perez yesterday. Oh well, I think Zambrano is going on the DL soon anyways.

Carlos? he pitched an 8 inning shutout today. He was unbelievable. I doubt he goes on the DL.

Oh s***, didn't catch that. I thought after he got hit in the hand then gave up 8 runs in that inning last week meant he was hurt..
