rangercal
Major League Baseball: Mr. Zero no longer hero in Windy City 07/20/2005 By DOUG PADILLA Special to The Asahi Shimbun CHICAGO-A fan favorite less than a year ago in a faraway land, Shingo Takatsu was out of a job Monday as the Chicago White Sox designated the right-hander for assignment. The move means the White Sox have 10 days to trade Takatsu or put him on waivers. The team, which has the best record in major league baseball at 62-29, is almost certain to trade Takatsu to another club before the 10-day window expires. If Takatsu somehow gets through waivers at the end of the 10-day period, he can accept a minor-league assignment from the White Sox or became a free agent and sign with any other team. "Tough decision, tough decision," White Sox general manager Ken Williams said. "It's something that we debated on for quite some time here." Takatsu saved 19 games in 20 chances last season after taking over the White Sox's closer role. His ability to change speeds and use his devastating changeup as an out pitch, led to a scoreless streak of 26 innings from April 23-June 29. He retired a 29 consecutive batters from May 26-June 22. This season, though, was a different story. He lost his closer's job in early May and struggled with his command. He was 0-1 in April with an 8.10 ERA, but had six saves. His eighth and final save with the Sox this season came on May 5. Takatsu had a 1-2 record with a 5.97 ERA at the time he was designated for assignment. In two major-league seasons, Takatsu was 7-6 with a 3.46 ERA and had 27 saves. He made 90 big league appearances. "I will think about (my situation)," is all Takatsu said Monday to the army of Japanese reporters that have been covering the Sox this season. And Takatsu gave that quote through his interpreter. The Sox had been close to dealing Takatsu to a team on the West Coast this past weekend. But that deal, believed to be with the Arizona Diamondbacks, fell apart. By designating Takatsu for assignment and creating the 10-day window, the White Sox have essentially set up a deadline for any interested teams. The major-league nonwaiver trade deadline is July 31. "It was one of my toughest days when we were trying to figure out how we were going to get this thing together," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I fought long with it. That kid was a great teammate. He did a lot of great things for us. He was really special for me. It was hard to do what we did." The move to likely part ways with Takatsu leaves Tadahito Iguchi as the lone Japanese player on the roster. Iguchi said he was shocked at the turn of events. He was a teammate to me and he was like my older brother," Iguchi said through an interpreter. And whenever I had a problem, something I didn't know or didn't understand about being new here, Takatsu was always there to help me out. He was my friend." I will miss shingo
