Inductee Boggs: 'Gentle giant' got bad break

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Frank Thomas sits 52 home runs shy of the 500-homer mark considered an automatic ticket to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Thomas, 37, still has Hall of Fame potential, but 500 home runs sure would help. With news that his broken left ankle likely ended his season, Thomas' career -- and his chances for Cooperstown -- are in question.

"It's just unfortunate he has been riddled with injuries the last couple of years that he couldn't keep up what he had going. He's a phenomenal player,'' said third baseman Wade Boggs, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame today and spent the latter part of his career playing against Thomas. "He is one of those guys who will take, take, take, then all of a sudden, if you make a mistake, it's out of the ballpark. He's one of the gentle giants who is playing the game right now.''

Boggs said Thomas' play belies his 6-5, 275-pound frame.

"He acts like he is 5-6, 110, the way he hits,'' Boggs said. "He is the prototype small guy in a giant frame. And he hits for power, and his eye is second to none. He's a remarkable player.''
