Hernandez, 44, spent the past two seasons as pitching coach with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He served from 1997-2003 as a coach in the Devil Rays' minor-league system, including the final six as the minor-league pitching coordinator.

A veteran of 27 seasons in professional baseball, his was a pitcher with the New York Yankees (1979-83) and Chicago White Sox (1983). His playing career ended when he broke his left arm in 1983.

Hernandez began his coaching career with the White Sox organization in 1985. He also coached in the California Angels organization before joining the Devil Rays.

Leyland was hired Oct. 4 to succeed Alan Trammell, who was let go after three seasons, as Tigers manager. Leyland managed Pittsburgh from 1986-96, the Florida Marlins from 1997-98 and the Colorado Rockies in 1999.
