Barons Hitting Coach Promoted To Triple-A Charlotte

Posted on May 21, 2003

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Birmingham Barons hitting coach, Gregg Ritchie, has been promoted to the White Sox AAA-affiliate, Charlotte Knights. He replaces hitting coach Greg Walker who was recently promoted to Chicago to take the place of former Sox hitting instructor Gary Ward. The replacement for Ritchie in Birmingham is still to be determined.

Ritchie, 39, is in his eighth season as a hitting coach in the White Sox organization and has spent the past four years in Birmingham. In the Barons’ 2002 championship season, Ritchie coached the Southern League West Division All-Star team and lead his hitters to a Southern League batting title with a .269 average. He was also instrumental in the development of Sox catcher Miguel Olivo and Southern League MVP Aaron Miles. In the offseason, he runs his own baseball school called “The Starting Lineup” and runs KaeLo Sports Inc. where he writes baseball instruction manuals and invents techniques and products for youth baseball players.

As a player, he played professionally for 10 seasons including six with the San Francisco organization from 1986-1992. The Fredricksburg, VA native batted .276 with 13 homers, 221 RBI and 177 stolen bases in 665 minor-league games. He was named to the Midwest League All-Star team in 1987 after posting a career-high .337average with 41 stolen bases at Class A Clinton.
