A FORMER chief executive for Australia's wheat exporter, AWB Ltd, has drawn the Federal Government directly into the Iraq oil-for-food scandal, saying he could recall his staff travelling to Canberra to discuss contracts with Saddam Hussein's regime that included multimillion-dollar kickbacks.

But Opposition foreign spokesman Kevin Rudd says the inquiry should be expanded to examine whether the Federal Government was aware of AWB's payments.

 

Mr Rudd said the UN warned the Federal Government six years ago about AWB's dealings with Iraq and the possibility the wheat exporter was engaged in sanctions-busting activities.
