SSH2005
http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...t=.jsp&c_id=cws • Anderson on intrasquad action: 350K • Jerry Owens on his speed: 350K • Ozzie Guillen on Brian Anderson: 350K I guess both Anderson and Owens hit triples in the intrasquad game yesterday. Both showed a lot of speed in the game. Owens is the fastest guy in the organization. Owens took full responsibility for leaving winter ball early. He sounds like a really good guy. SSH2005
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...rtswhitesox-hed Intrasquad intrigue Guillen was pleased some veteran position players asked to play in the intrasquad game. Designated hitter Jim Thome showed no ill effects from right elbow surgery, pulling two curveballs from Mark Buehrle down the first-base line, one for a single. "Most of the veterans just want to relax and get ready for the real games," Guillen said. "These guys want at-bats right away and they show my coaching staff and my organization what kind of players, what kind of people we have. "Freddy [Garcia] was sitting in the dugout with Javy [Vazquez] the whole game. It's a nice thing to see, when the guys who are your horses want to see the games and see what we have." Jerry Owens tripled off Brandon McCarthy and Brian Anderson tripled off 2005 No. 1 pick Lance Broadway. Buehrle threw 41 pitches, allowing two runs on seven hits. McCarthy allowed three runs on seven hits in a 50-pitch outing. Left-hander Neal Cotts gave up a two-run homer to Josh Hansen. http://suntimes.com/output/sox/cst-spt-cowley28.html PLAY BALL: The Sox played their first intrasquad game of the spring, with Brandon McCarthy and Mark Buehrle getting the starts. Buehrle threw 41 pitches, allowing two runs on seven hits, while McCarthy allowed three runs on seven hits in two innings. "I'm just trying to get ready mechanically,'' McCarthy said. "I certainly wasn't sharp, but it's just a starting point of where you are. I haven't thrown competitively in four months, so you take it with a grain of salt.'' Lance Broadway, selected in the first round of last year's draft, went 2-1/3 innings, allowing only one hit and fanning three. Paul Konerko was 0-for-3, and Jim Thome went 1-for-2. Outfielders Jerry Owens and Brian Anderson each had a triple. SORE SUBJECT: Right-handed closer Bobby Jenks was scratched from the intrasquad game with a sore left shoulder. Jenks said he slept on it wrong and would be ready to pitch Wednesday in the Sox' first Cactus League game. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=161195 Participation in intrasquad game thrills Guillen By Scot Gregor Daily Herald Sports Writer Posted Tuesday, February 28, 2006 TUCSON, Ariz. — The White Sox played an intrasquad game Monday, which typically means every obscure player a with uniform number of 60 and higher gets a brief chance to make a good impression. For the most part, that was true in the Sox’ annual spring scrimmage. But manager Ozzie Guillen was impressed when bigger names like Paul Konerko, Jim Thome, Brian Anderson and Rob Mackowiak stepped in for a few swings. “When you’ve got an intrasquad game, most of the regulars don’t want to play,’’ Guillen said. “We’re different. They ask me if they can get some at-bats. That’s the attitude we created. “You don’t see that on other teams, at least the ones I’ve watched. Most of the veteran guys just want to relax and get ready for the real games. These guys want at-bats right away and they show my coaching staff and my organization what kind of players, what kind of people we have.’’ Konerko was 0-for-3 with 3 groundouts. “I like to get all of my horse(bleep) swings out of the way before the exhibition games start,’’ Konerko said. Guillen also appreciated starting pitchers Freddy Garcia and Javier Vazquez taking in the game from the dugout. “It’s a nice thing to see, when the guys who are your horses want to see the games and see what we have,’’ Guillen said. “It’s a good feeling when the players give you that respect. I’m lucky to have those kinds of players with me.’’ Lights are bright: Mark Buehrle, Neal Cotts and Brandon McCarthy got in some work during the intrasquad game, but Ozzie Guillen didn’t pay much attention to the established pitchers. Guillen took a closer look at young pitchers like Lance Broadway, the Sox’ first-round pick in last year’s draft, and Ray Liotta, who was a combined 14-5 with a 2.02 ERA for Class A Kannapolis and A Winston-Salem last season. “I wanted to see (Lance) Broadway, and this kid threw the ball outstanding today,’’ Guillen said. “It gives me a better chance to see somebody I don’t know. I’m not worried about Buehrle, I’m not worried about Cotts, I’m not even worried about McCarthy. I think having Broadway throw the ball and all of those guys, it gives me an opportunity to see what kind of deal we have.’’ Edited February 28, 2006 by SSH2005
