I have the first pick and my keeper is C Lee 9th rd, I plan on picking Santana #1. Who should I target for my 2nd and 3rd rd picks? Or who do you think will be the top picks available?

Well from what ive heard on fantasy baseball radio, a big key to succes is drafting premium hitters.

Pitchers well pop up all the time, arem ore injury prone.

Hitters are harder to come by, and generally more stable.

I would look on finding 2 big bats.

Duno who would be there, maybe do you have any knowledge of who would be people to pick from or?

Targeting individual players, or even a certain type of player, isn't a very good approach. You simply have no idea who will be available, so you're either going to be disappointed when your target isn't there, or you're going to pass on a better option because of your plan.

 

I don't know exactly who will be available with your first pick, but while Santana is good, there might be better values. He's probably the 7th rated player or so, so if one of the elite hitters (A-Rod, Pujols, Vlad, Tex, Manny, Ortiz) are there you should probably take him. I might even take a solid youngster like Cabrera or Wright over Santana, although that is a preference thing. If you do end up with Santana however, you should probably grab a hitter in the next round. Try to go for lower risk productive players that are still pretty young. If you end up with a hitter, you have more flexibility and can do whatever you want.

I just realized that I contradicted my own argument in a way.

 

I guess the major key is wait to see who is there before you start figuring out who you want. Don't get set on taking a power hitter and end up passing on Utley, or getting set on a speed guy and passing on Pedro. Just try to take the best player each time. It might even end up being Santana-Pedro-Halladay in the first three rounds. Granted I probably wouldn't take those 3 because my balance would be shot, but try to be flexible.

Definitely. Vlad is a guy that can help you in 5 categories. He'll probably post something like 110-35-120-12-.325. That's pretty impressive across the board. Santana will give you good strikeout, ERA, and WHIP totals, but he might not give you that much in wins because of the Twins' anemic offense.
