Front Runner for Leader of Canada's Liberal Party

Featured Replies

TORONTO -- Michael Ignatieff, a former Harvard professor and human rights advocate, unofficially launched his bid to lead Canada's Liberal Party, a position that would make him prime minister if the party were to regain the power it lost in January elections.

Ignatieff, 58, has been touted as a leading candidate for the party leadership in a field left open after Paul Martin's loss to Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper. In a speech at the University of Ottawa, Ignatieff outlined a vision for Canada that included a strong federal government. He also defended his support of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, which is highly unpopular here.

Ignatieff, often criticized for his 27-year absence from Canada, offered criticisms of the United States, too. "I did not want to live in a country where 40 million citizens don't have health care . . . where a woman's right to choose is still a battleground . . . where equality of all citizens regardless of sexual orientation is not a constitutional right," he said.
