Upton to move to Third Base

B.J. Upton - SS - Devil Rays

The Devil Rays said Wednesday that they plan to move B.J. Upton to third base in Triple-A and call him up for the final two months of the season.

"We haven't put a specific timetable on this, with the idea being for him to move over and get comfortable at that position," said executive VP Andrew Friedman. "There's an obvious hole there after the [Aubrey] Huff trade. [it will happen] as soon as we feel he's comfortable. That could be two weeks, it could be longer. It's hard to say." Friedman went on to say that it wasn't necessarily a permanent move and that Upton still could end up at shortstop if Julio Lugo is traded or leaves as a free agent at the end of the year. Even though Upton hasn't been hitting well in Triple-A of late, today's news makes him worth picking up immediately in AL-only leagues. With his stolen-base potential, he could be quite an asset during August and September. Jul. 12 - 6:46 pm et

No, he plays mainly 2nd. Huff played a lot of third.
