August 30, 200619 yr Would that really have an effect on this year's offseason? Seems to me like it wouldn't go into effect till next year? It should make the July deadline more exciting than it has been the past couple years.
August 30, 200619 yr Quick, someone check Billy Beane's pulse. Thinking out loud: I guess the players' union would care about this because it awards more top-end players to small-market teams, meaning the sum of all contracts is smaller. Is that right? (For that to be true, MLBPA would have to grab some proportion of the initial contract, through dues, say, instead of just taking a cut of major league salaries -- since even big contract players usually get MLB minimum salaries initially.) But I just can't believe it would be a big enough difference for the MLBPA to care much, while it really does seem to hurt MLB, in that they probably wouldn't want to make the big market-small market gap any larger. So why would an agreement like this come about?
