Dem. Rangel Calling for Military Draft

So Yas's comment comes off to you as an insult to the military, but Kerrry saying only stupid people join is not?

Here's an insult to the military ....

If there’s anyone who believes that these youngsters want to fight, as the Pentagon and some generals have said, you can just forget about it. No young, bright individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits. And most all of them come from communities of very, very high unemployment. If a young fellow has an option of having a decent career or joining the Army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq.

Above quote courtesy of none other than the man in the thread title.

Military service is not a 'decent career'? No bright, young individuals wants to .... ? I'd be willing to bet that most Americans hold military personel in higher esteem than say, oh ... politicians.

Texsox ... Yes! There are ways to GIVE back. It's called volunteering. It's entirely different than mandated service.

PA ... Your friend volunteered his service and is receiving his training as a result. Great! That's the way it should be. However, conscriptees would necessarily get the same type of deal. More than likely, they'd be doing the grunt work.

I think that Kerry's comment was unintentional, stupid and yeah, a bit insulting. But it was also a bad joke gone wrong, and I very much doubt a dig at the military.

i don't think the government should have authoratitive power to forcefully mandate service to the coutry unless there is a relevant and immediate threat to the survival of the country.

End of discussion.
