It might be the Shinto and not the Buddhist influence. There are slightly more japanese that identify themselves as belonging to the native Japanese Shinto (spirit or kami worship) than to the imported Buddhism. Christianity is a distant third, picking up only about 1% of the Japanese God vote%

 

An interesting byproduct of that mix is a big scary jolly Buddah named Hoteiosho who has to take over the Santa Claus role at Christmas.
