Fernando Hernandez, Jr.

DOB: 7/31/84 in Miami, Florida (23rd birthday imminent, so I'll say he's 23)

Height: 5'11"

Weight: 190

Bats and Throws Right Handed

Graduated from HS in 2002 from Miami Southwest, spent one year at Broward Community College in South Florida. Signed with the White Sox on May 26, 2003 according to Baseball Cube. Was a 49th round pick in the 2002 Draft according to FutureSox and USA Today, which makes that signing day make more sense. Anyways, here are his numbers (all games at every level were in relief):

2003 Great Falls: 1-3, 2.70 ERA, 24 games, 23.1 IP, 23 hits, 0 HR, 10 BB, 14 K, 7 wild pitches, 5.40 K/9, 1.41 WHIP, 7 saves

2004 Kanny: 3-3, 2.98 ERA, 28 games, 45.1 IP, 43 hits, 2 HR, 16 BB, 59 K, 3 wild pitches, 11.71 K/9, 1.30 WHIP, 4 saves

2005 W-S: 4-1, 5.14 ERA, 45 games, 70 IP, 83 hits, 6 HR, 30 BB, 59 K, 3 wild pitches, 7.59 K/9, 1.61 WHIP, 1 save

2006 W-S: 7-5, 1.93 ERA, 57 games, 65.1 IP, 50 hits, 4 HR, 32 BB, 81 K, 5 wild pitches, 11.09 K/9, 1.26 WHIP, 13 saves, 1.47 GO/AO, .207 BAA, made all star team

2007 B-Ham (through 7/25): 0-1, 2.91 ERA, 42 games, 65 IP, 52 hits, 4 HR, 15 BB, 65 K, 4 wild pitches, 9 K/9, 1.04 WHIP, 6 saves, 1.39 GO/AO, .218 BAA

So basically, he was trash at W-S in 2005, but has been pretty damn good besides that. 5'11 height isn't doing him any favors, but he's one to watch.

After being a rule 5 pick of Oakland, the Sox were able to re-attain Hernandez's rights last month after 3 innings of unsuccessful work with the A's. Fernando is 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA in 7 games at Birmingham. He's allowed 3 hits in 8.2 innings, a solo HR, has 5 walks to go with 9 k's, a 2.40 GO/AO, and sterling .103 average against.

Since being reacquired by the Sox, Hernandez has spent all of his time at Birmingham:

5-4 with a 4.08 ERA in 32 relief efforts. 46.1 IP, 42 hits (2 homers), 26 walks, 42 strikeouts, 1.24 GO/AO, .249 BAA

Yesterday was his 24th birthday, and Fernando has very good stuff, especially for a 49th round pick. But he's had some control problems this year, and before he can think about Charlotte or beyond, that needs to be rectified.
