Inside look: Home away from home

Fans can help White Sox Charities, take peek at clubhouse

A baseball player's routine prior to a game can be as instrumental to his success on the field as any other element of preparation. The gameday routine -- the special taping of wrists and ankles, a particular way of applying eye black, reviewing notes from a video session -- starts in the place all players call home, the clubhouse.

Like the dugout and bullpen, the clubhouse is a team's sanctuary from the distraction and noise prior to games, and the euphoria, sometimes chaos, after games. Very rarely do fans have the opportunity to glimpse into the players' home at the ballpark. Yet, this offseason, White Sox fans have a chance to walk through the same doors Bobby Jenks walks through to prepare for a game. They will be able to visit the locker where Jim Thome sits before games.

The team's first ever "Clubhouse Sale" at U.S. Cellular Field on Friday, Nov. 30-Sunday, Dec. 2 will give fans the opportunity to visit the home clubhouse and provide access to purchase new, officially licensed team merchandise, which will be marked down 20 to 50 percent. Among the new merchandise for sale -- and keeping with the theme of walking where the players do, in this case "wearing" as they do -- will be the 2008 Majestic Authentic MLB On-Field Team Jacket.

The Clubhouse Sale will include a Chicago White Sox Charities presence throughout the weekend, with Legacy Bricks available for purchase through Saturday, and a special visit by The Score Radio's "White Sox Weekly," which will broadcast live from the visiting clubhouse on Saturday morning (10 a.m.-12 p.m. CT). A portion of the weekend's proceeds go to Chicago White Sox Charities.

The $5 cost of admission (redeemable toward the purchase of merchandise) is a small price to pay to visit the player safe haven at U.S. Cellular Field. Whether holiday shopping for a fan, or simply taking in the atmosphere of the room where the likes of Mark Buehrle, Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko gather before stepping on the field, this coming weekend will provide fans an inside look at the place White Sox players call their "home away from home."

Clubhouse Sale dates and hours: Friday, Nov. 30, 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 1, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 2, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..

what a great way to TRY and sell off the thousands of bricks that unaccounted for.... :stick

We actually went on Friday, definitely worth the trip for us. They don't quite have the full fan shop selection, but it's definitely decent. I got a hoodie with the old hitman logo and a matching hat, Dad got a polo shirt, saved about $40.

If you want a Thome or Konerko jersey you should DEFINITELY go, those are 50% off.

How was the clubhouse? What was off-limits?

Well, basically all of the chairs and such were shoved to the one side by the TV, and the lockers were cleared out with merchandise taking their place. You got a better feel for the place at the "Grinder Bash".

Wasn't this in the home clubhouse? The grinder bash in recent years has just been the visiting clubhouse.

Yeah, it was. It's definitely bigger, and they had big recliners that you can see off on the side by the big flat screen on the wall. It's a pretty similar setup though.

No game used stuff - just new items. Didn't see any Cabrera jerseys but wasn't looking for one. If hey had any they were 20% off.
