mreye
I'm heading out Wedensday night for a long weekend trip. Any suggestions? Tips?
ChiSox_Sonix
Brooks BBQ is about 15 minutes away just outside of Oneonta which is very good. If you want a nice dinner, and by nice I mean elegant 5 star quality, the Otesaga is amazing. There's a farmers museum in Cooperstown as well as the Fennimore house. I actually havent been there in a couple years. I gave a presentation during the annual symposium a couple summers back. Just walk around downtown and there are cool shops all over. There's a wax museum and a place to get a bat engraved if either of those interest you. There's a Cider Mill up there as well as a winery. I'd also suggest checking out the two breweries. Cooperstown Brewing Company is one of them and Ommegang is the other. CBC makes a beer called Pride of Milford which is probably my favorite. They have several IPA style beers. A tour/tasting is like $5. Ommegang might be $10, i havent been a couple years but they make Belgian style beers. I think its the oldest belgian style brewery in the states. I'd recommend checking that one out in particular. Also, about 20 minutes away in Oneonta is the National Soccer Hall of Fame if that is of any interest to you. I grew up in Binghamton and went to school in Oneonta so i used to go up at least once a year, but i'm further downstate now and havent had a chance to go back. Unfortunately i cant remember the name of the little restaurant on Main St i used to go to. It really is quite exceptional.
Soxy
You're lucky to go this time of year. Upstate is at its most beautiful right about now. If you are outdoorsy, you won't be that far from the really, really, really beautiful Adirondack State Park. They have some decent trails. And it's definitely worth the trip. Cooperstown is pretty small and cutesy. Other than the hall there isn't really a ton to do. (There are lots of shops, but I found most of them pretty overpriced.) The hall is pretty awesome--I've been 3 times and spent at least 5 hours each time. Legend field is fun. I've never been there for an actual game, but it's a great place to just sit. Make sure you take lots of pictures with the pinwheel from Old Comiskey.
mreye
Thanks for the replies. Yeah, we've already planned to go to Ommegang. It's a guys trip, are there any good pub like places or sports bars to watch the World Series?
Soxy
QUOTE (mreye @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) Thanks for the replies. Yeah, we've already planned to go to Ommegang. It's a guys trip, are there any good pub like places or sports bars to watch the World Series? I can't remember the name of it. But we watched a game in some bar that was off the main street. Each time I've gone I've eaten in a different local pub, and the food has always been awesome. And there's always a game on. I wish I could remember the name of my favorite one. It's off the main street, and you have to take a few steps down (it's a little below street level) and it was just really cool. Clean, great food, fun atmosphere (and not as touristy as some). Yeah, but everything tastes good that close to the baseball hall. Like how popcorn is always better at the park.
G&T
QUOTE (mreye @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) Thanks for the replies. Yeah, we've already planned to go to Ommegang. It's a guys trip, are there any good pub like places or sports bars to watch the World Series? I've been there twice. You picked a great time because the New York City folk are gone so parking will be easy and nothing will be crowded. Everything on Main Street is baseball themed, and you will be able to wonder place to place. Everything is close by.
