Working much shorter stints, Poreda's main goal in Arizona has been to further develop his off-speed repertoire.

 

"I'm developing my changeup as a third pitch," he explained. "Over the first season, my slider became my 1-2 punch with my fastball and I didn't work with my changeup much."

 

It's a lesson he learned as he moved so quickly up the ladder in his first full pro season.

 

"When I was in college I could get away with making mistakes over the middle and challenging people with fastballs," he said. "But here, if you keep on throwing fastballs, people will hit them and make you look silly."
