Cox called former major-league managers Jeff Torborg, Jack McKeon and Jim Tracy and former general manager John Schuerholz to thank them for helping him attain his milestone, which fully vests him in Major League Baseball's pension program. A replica of a bronze star medal was tattooed on Cox's right arm in memory of his father, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John R. Cox, who passed away in 1998. "It's like I reached the summit," said Cox, 53, who spent 26 years in the minor leagues. "This one is extremely special." Manager Ozzie Guillen was proud because Cox barely played in the majors and spent time in several organizations before earning this milestone. "With [little] experience in the big leagues, he didn't have that many friends in the game but always found a job," Guillen said. "It's a big accomplishment." Personnel matters: Second baseman Chris Getz probably won't return to the starting lineup until Thursday. Getz showed improvement from a right ankle bruise but won't play Wednesday night because Oakland is starting left-hander Josh Outman. Catcher Ramon Castro will make his first start with the Sox on Wednesday night. Wilson Betemit started at third base in place of Josh Fields, and Guillen hinted Betemit might start Wednesday in place of designated hitter Jim Thome. Extra innings: Jose Contreras pitched six innings of three-hit ball Tuesday night for Triple-A Charlotte against Columbus. Contreras allowed one run and four walks while striking out three. He threw 63 of 101 pitches for strikes. He is targeted to pitch in the Sox's doubleheader Monday against Detroit. ... Six Blackhawks players participated in batting practice. Based on those factors I figured Ron Karkovice would look older than he is. He is not yet 46. What do you think? I'm not sure. I must continue to beat a dead horse on this - Chris Getz' numbers are vitually identical, if not slightly better, against lefties throughout a substantial MiLB career.
