MEXICAN LEAGUE

Jesus Avila (2B, played at GF last year), Caneros de los Mochis

Ehren Wassermann (RHP, Charlotte), Venados de Mazatlan (and he's been used as a starter down there)

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Cole Armstrong (C, Charlotte), Aguilas Cibaenas

Franklyn German (RHP, maybe still with us?), Aguilas Cibaenas

Wander Perez (LHP, Winston-Salem last year), Estrellas de Oriente

Santo Luis (RHP, Winston-Salem last year), Estrellas de Oriente

Kelvin Jimenez (RHP, Charlotte last year), Estrellas de Oriente

Tony Pena (RHP, listed as Sox, not sure why), Gigantes del Cibao

Charlis Burdie (RHP, Winston-Salem last year), Gigantes del Cibao

Jhonny Nunez (RHP, Charlotte last year, maybe Sox this year), Tigres del Licey

Stefan Gartrell (OF, Charlotte last year), Toros del Este

Alejandro De Aza (OF, FA acquisition), Toros del Este

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

Alex Rios (OF, CWS), Criollos de Caguas

*Henry Blanco (possible target), Bravos de Margarita

Josh Kroeger (OF, Charlotte last year), Leones del Caracas

Miguel Socolovich (RHP, Winston-Salem last year), Leones del Caracas

Clevelan Santeliz (RHP, Birmingham last year), Navegantes del Magallanes

Freddy Garcia (RHP, CWS), Navegantes del Magallanes

Johny Celis (1B, Great Falls last year), Tiburones de la Guaira

Eduardo Escobar (SS, Kannapolis last year), Tiburones de la Guaira (he’s listed at 5’10”, 150 pounds – damn that boy is skinny)

Joucer Martinez (RHP, Great Falls last year), Tiburones de la Guaira

Jon Link (RHP, Charlotte last year, CWS this year maybe?), Tiburones de la Guaira

Fernando Hernandez (RHP, Charlotte last year), Tiburones de la Guaira

Santeliz pitching well- 10.07 K/9, 3.2 BB/9 (3.15 K/BB) plus just 1 home run in 19.2 innings.

I'm completely uneducated on this subject, but is it common for major league players to play in Winter League? (Rios, Garcia)

Is it a way of them to come back to form, does the organization send them or is it up to the player?

Is it a way of them to come back to form, does the organization send them or is it up to the player?

There are several reasons you see it, including...

1. It seems some players are automatically named on rosters for teams in their home countries. It doesn't mean they're going to play. (For example, Pudge Rodriguez's name seems to show up on a Puerto Rico roster most years. Dominican MLB players' names seem to show up on DR teams, etc.)

2. Guys who had short seasons due to injury often are sent to winter ball to get innings or at-bats.

3. Players who are on the bubble roster-wise (for example, almost out of options, etc.) often are sent to winter ball so teams can get another look at them before making a decision.

4. Young pitchers who are looking to refine control or add a pitch are often given time in winter lball to figure it out before spring training.

Sometimes organizations mandate the moves.

Other times, marginal players opt to go on their own to improve their chance of making a roster or audition for jobs.

But you don't often see successful pros play a full winter season. Most guys want the winter off.

Edited by scenario
