Sox injury updates

White Sox trainer Herm Schneider may be the best at his job in baseball. But despite his best efforts, he cannot prevent the freak accidents that have landed three Sox players on the shelf in the last week.

First, A.J. Pierzynski landed on the disabled list when it was discovered he suffered a fractured left wrist Aug. 13. Next, Philip Humber was placed on the shelf after a line drive struck his forehead Aug. 18. And, on Saturday, Carlos Quentin sprained the AC joint his shoulder diving for a ball in right field -- although, unlike Pierzynski and Humber, Quentin does not appear destined for the disabled list and is listed as day-to-day.

Pierzynski expects to return to the White Sox Sept. 1 -- the day rosters can expand from 25 players to 40 -- so the Sox won't have to make a roster move to accommodate the 34-year-old backstop. On the season, Pierzynski has a .338 on-base percentage with six home runs. If his OBP holds up, it'll be his highest mark since being traded away from the Twins after the 2003 season.

Humber should return around the same time as Pierzynski, as the White Sox catcher noted he's likely to catch a Humber rehab start in the minors before re-joining the Sox. After posting a 2.57 ERA through his first 15 starts, the right-hander has a 7.16 ERA in his last six outings.

Quentin is aiming for a return this weekend in Seattle after his injury this weekend, an injury he initially feared was a broken bone. Luckily for the right fielder, it's just a sprain, and while he admitted the injury hurts now, it's one he hopes will improve daily to get to the point where he can play again sooner rather than later.

He's unlikely to land on the disabled list, which means Dayan Viciedo will probably join the White Sox on the first day of September.

Quentin has 24 home runs and 77 RBIs with an .842 OPS for the White Sox in 2011.
