Deciding "greatest" in anything

Featured Replies

I placed this in SL&M as a way to keep the discussion generic to all things, not just a specific sport.

Whenever the discussion becomes who is the greatest __________ , it seems that the first hurdle is the length of a career. Too short and the body of work isn't there, yest if you enjoy a very long career, your stats become discounted.

Make one or two great movies may not be enough, but make 30 nearly great ones, maybe not enough either.

Have three or four great seasons in a 10 year career versus a 30 year career almost seems better.

So where is the balance? What does it take to be the greatest actor of all time? Greatest accountant? Greatest doctor? Baseball player?

How do we define "Greatest of all-time"?
