Who’s No. 1?

Cleuluis Rondon (White Sox) is a 20-year-old, defensive-oriented shortstop on the rise, but after hitting .233/.295/.262 in 77 games at Kannapolis, it’s fair to wonder how far one can reasonably project his bat. He moved on to high Class A Winston-Salem in July and continued to thrive defensively with 2.98 A/G and +7 assists in 53 games. He also led all minor league shortstops with 103 double plays and 648 total chances, and he tied Cito Culver with 404 assists. Chicago acquired Rondon (along with Avisail Garcia and Francellis Montas) in July 2013 when they kicked in Jake Peavy to the three-team deal also involving the Tigers and Red Sox.

Winston-Salem’s Tim Anderson (White Sox) lacks efficiency in the field, with an .897 fielding percentage and Carolina League-leading total of 31 errors in just 66 games, but he also used electric athleticism and range to record +12 assists in that time. Plus, he continued to rack up assists in 10 games Double-A Birmingham (3.20 A/G) .
