Melissa Mayeux was added to the international registration list, becoming the first woman to do so.

"She's a legitimate shortstop who makes all the plays and is very smooth and fluid in the field," he said. "She swings the bat really well and is fearless."

McClellan recalls an at-bat the right-handed Mayeux had during a tournament in Barcelona in April. She was facing a 19-year-old Dominican pitcher who was throwing 91 mph, which is considerably harder than most pitchers in her age group can throw. "She ripped a base hit off of him, just to the right of second base," McClellan said. "She just went with the pitch, and she looked good doing it."

Obviously it's batting practice and fielding practice, but looks like she's got a smooth swing and looked good fielding those grounders.

It'll be interesting to follow Mayeux. Sox should sign her, they need defense and people that can battle in at-bats.

At 16, she'll have to wait a bit I assume. Hopefully she can play some more legitimate competition, but again when she's just 16 there are lots of stateside prospects that haven't seen future pro competition at that age. What they didn't say is how big she is. I wonder if she has pro size.

This might be a stupid question, but are women permitted to play in MLB?
